Oh I love my sleep…….. I can sleep for a long time if I have it my way… My sweet bed is my second husband. I suppose my husband does envy my sleep hygiene and wishes he could sleep like me…..so does mum……
Please don’t compare me with Proverbs 20….
Proverbs 20: 13 do not love sleep or you will grow poor; stay awake and you will have food to spare.
I believe it is for those who idle around sleeping most of the time without any labor or any work for their daily bread and living….
I did wonder who sleeps more or better, is it man or woman. Statistics results vary upon medical research done since a lot of factors come to place such as different hormones, different life styles and circumstances.
I read what Dr. Martha Cortes, a New York City-based dentist who sub-specializes in the treatment of sleep breathing disorders: Dr Cortes says:
- Women Need More Sleep
Great news: Women are, in general, more adept at multitasking than men are. But all that brain power means that typically, women “need more sleep, because they need the brain to recover from all the work of multitasking.
Ladies I think I have to agree with Dr Cortes, we do multi-task and hence we need more sleep…especially when nursing little ones…
- Women Are More Likely to Go to Sleep Earlier
And, in turn, women tend to wake up earlier, too. This is caused by differences in circadian rhythm, which, according to the National Sleep Foundation, is “basically a 24-hour internal clock that is running in the background of your brain and cycles between sleepiness and alertness at regular intervals.” Dr. Cortes says women have circadian cycles that are, on average, six minutes shorter. Because of this six-minute difference, women typically go to bed and wake up earlier.
Interesting isn’t it…? Well for me in simple terms, women have a household to manage, the load itself, will exhaust you enough to sleep early and wake up early if you managed to get some reasonable hours of 6-8 hrs sleep -continuously. And yes being responsible, you will get up early even though you might want to sleep more as the household, the food, the children everything is waiting on you to start the day…
- Insomnia Is More Common in Women
Sleep apnea, on the other hand, is more common in men. “About 4 percent of men have sleep apnea, compared to about 2 percent in women,” says Dr. Cortes. Women are more likely to experience insomnia than their male counterparts.
I am guessing hormones vary and are different for both men and women, to why Dr Cortes states sleep problem is more frequent with women.. Well ladies we do run the house although the man remains the head of the family…
- Women Sleep Deeper Than Men
While women do require more sleep, that sleep is typically more productive than the z’s men are getting.
That’s me, I sleep deeper than my husband and he envies me for that…..
Not to mention I am very miserable if I don’t have a good profound sleep…
Deep and sweet sleep, yes bring it on….
Oh I love to curl up and cuddle the mountains of pillows and rub my feet gently on the mattress whilst feeling the soft touch of the blanket keeping me warm…..for me it is like boarding a ship and awaiting a journey in my sleep.
So what does God say about sleep, do you wonder how He created it and the rationale of it ?
What does the Bible say about sleep? Sleeping is mentioned in various scriptures in the bible. For one, as the obvious time of rest during the night as we recover our energy to take on the next day. In this context, the Bible mentions trusting in God as an assurance of such peaceful resting. If we are troubled by worries preventing us from sleeping, we can cast our worries and fear upon the love and sovereignty of God.
Furthermore, we also note that sleep is the time when we dream especially when God is trying to communicate to you. The bible gives us the characters of people who experienced and received a message from God in a vision.
Job 33:15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds.
Proverbs 3:24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down; your sleep will be sweet.
Psalm 4:8 In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.
Too much sleep is not good either…you end up waking feeling heavy, with a pounding headache and feeling lazy…
My favourite scripture will have to be Mathew 11:28-30 (NIV): “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Very powerful scripture especially for those with sleep disorders and stress.. Meditate and believe in this scripture and Jesus will give you the rest, the peace that no world can offer. That should be the best sleeping pill.
Why is it important to practice good sleep hygiene?
Obtaining healthy sleep is important for both physical and mental health. It can also improve productivity and overall quality of life. Everyone, from children to older adults benefit from good sleep habits. A lot happens in your body while you sleep. Dreams and dreams flow, all sorts, good and nightmares. When you get your ZZZs, you cycle between REM and non-REM sleep.
What Happens During Non-REM Sleep?
There are three phases of non-REM sleep. Each stage can last from 5 to 15 minutes. You go through all three phases before reaching REM sleep.
Stage 1: Your eyes are closed, but it’s easy to wake you up. This phase may last for 5 to 10 minutes.
Stage 2: You are in light sleep. Your heart rate slows and your body temperature drops. Your body is getting ready for deep sleep.
Stages 3: This is the deep sleep stage. It’s harder to rouse you during this stage, and if someone woke you up, you would feel disoriented for a few minutes.
During the deep stages of NREM sleep, the body repairs and regrows tissues, builds bone and muscle, and strengthens the immune system.
As you get older, you sleep more lightly and get less deep sleep. Aging is also linked to shorter time spans of sleep, although studies show you still need as much sleep as when you were younger.
What Is REM sleep?
A sleep that occurs at intervals during the night and is characterized by rapid eye movements, more dreaming and bodily movement, and faster pulse and breathing.
Usually, REM sleep happens 90 minutes after you fall asleep. The first period of REM typically lasts 10 minutes. Each of your later REM stages gets longer, and the final one may last up to an hour. Your heart rate and breathing quicken. You can have intense dreams during REM sleep, since your brain is more active. Babies can spend up to 50% of their sleep in the REM stage, compared to only about 20% for adults.
From light sleepers to deep sleepers, what matters is having a decent amount of sleep to refresh your exhaustive body and brain.
Sleep disorders, constant tossing and turning, broken sleep, intermittent sleep followed by nightmares sometimes violent dreams will surely impact on your well-being. Many reasons could contribute to it from your lifestyles, your age, how healthy you are, your hormones, your level of stress and very often spiritual warfare.
How can I improve my sleep hygiene?
One of the most important sleep hygiene practices is to spend an appropriate amount of time asleep in bed, not too little or too much. Sleep needs vary across ages and are especially impacted by lifestyle and health. Good sleep hygiene includes:
First of all, you pray and ask God to bless you with the Rest your body/soul need.
Repent of any sins known and unknown. Ask the Holy Spirit for revelation for any open doors that might be leading to spiritual warfare in your life.
Avoid Napping as it does not make up for inadequate night-time sleep. However, a short nap of 20-30 minutes can help improve your mood and alertness.
Avoid stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine close to bedtime.
Exercise during the day to promote good quality sleep.
Steering clear of food that can be disruptive right before sleep. Heavy or rich foods, fatty or fried meals, spicy dishes, citrus fruits, and carbonated drinks can trigger indigestion for some people. However some will argue eating before sleep helps them sleep better.
Making sure that your sleep environment is pleasant. Mattress and pillows should be comfortable. Keep away from bright light. Go for dim light instead and some nice relaxing music, why not some gospel music.
You start with your prayer before sleep and prayer after you wake up to thank the Lord for your peaceful sleep.
Amen in Jesus Name.
However, nothing stops you from waking up during the night to pray, especially if you feel prompted by the Holy Spirit. Many people tend to sleep but wake up at midnight to advance their spiritual life.
Psalm 119:62 gives us a confirmation, ” At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You, because of Your righteous Judgements.
David was able to wake up at midnight and dedicate his time to God by composing his music, praying and quietly and peacefully meditating.
Act 16:25: “But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God and the prisoners were listening to them”
Paul and Silas must have been exhausted from being beaten with rods but they stayed awake to pray at midnight, surely we can do the same and get out of that comfy pillows and bed…
No wonder mystics tend to focus on the midnight prayers.. that’s the time of no distraction but focus in that serene moment. It appears that the awake time in between the 2 sleep cycles has been a long practice among Jews and other religions.
Now this does not mean you have to deprive your beauty sleep. Science tells us adults need at least 6-8 hrs sleep per day to function as normal. If you want to have those midnight prayers and beyond, then it is a sacrifice you have to commit to with God’s Grace as I have tried it my dear, before I knew, I was back in my duvet.
But with God’s grace, the Holy Spirit will prompt you to wake up, same Grace will carry you in worship and prayers and you will not feel tired or lack of sleep after, how can you when you are spiritually filled with the Lord.
Obviously, if you have a busy lifestyle or an early start to the day or suffer from sleep disorders, these have to be taken into consideration, still God will meet you where you are, He knows you best, He can help work out a plan that will work effectively for you, both for your sleep, your prayers and spiritual growth.
Thank you Jesus, Amen.
